GAME WORKSHOP
2030 SDGs GAME
What will it take to build a better world?
What is the 2030 sdgs game?
The 2030 SDGs Game is a powerful experiential game-based workshop simulating what could happen in our world in 2030.
The game highlights the importance of balancing the three pillars of People, Planet and Prosperity, and invites participants to explore the mindset and actions that are required to advance sustainability.
Developed in 2016 by Japanese organisation Imacocollabo, the 2030 SDGs Game has now been played by over 400,000 people worldwide.
Through play, participants become more aware of themselves, others, the world we live in and the impact of the choices we make.
In the game participants spend time and money in order to run projects, with the objective of achieving their mission…what will be the impact of their decisions? What will the other people in their world do? What kind of world will emerge by 2030? All is revealed during game play.
The worlds created during 2030 SDGs Game workshops are different every time, as they result from the unique mix of people who gather to play together
Why play the game?
OWNERSHIP
I have a role to play
“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”
Ownership is one of the key barriers for companies wanting to embed sustainability across their business. The 2030 SDGs Game contributes to changing the mindset that sustainability is the responsibility of someone else. The game helps to demystify the SDGs, brings them to life and highlight how they are interconnected
COLLABORATION
We can change the world when we work together
“Together we can do so much”
To succeed in the 2030 SDGs Game, participants need to see the bigger picture, think collectively and work together. They get to experience first hand what it takes to create a balanced world. This makes the workshop a great tool for team-building sessions, as well as developing communication and collaboration skills.
RESPONSIBILITY
My actions are important
“Small actions. Big impact.”
Playing the game and reflecting on it afterwards, participants realise how important all of our actions are and that even seemingly small actions can have a big impact. SDGs are not the responsibility of the few, they apply to all of us and it will take all sectors of society to fulfil the ambitions of the goals. In the game setting players are able to explore the power of their actions, the role they can play and how they can contribute to a more balanced world. This realisation can inspire participants to get involved and take action for sustainability in the real world.
Who is the game for?
The 2030 SDGs Game has been played with government officials, C-suite executives, university students and with secondary school children. Every person who plays the 2030 SDGs Game comes away with their own ‘Kizukis’.
気づき ‘Kizuki’
‘Aha’ moments are unique and individual to each of us, and can be sparked in many different ways. The 2030 SDGs Game comes from Japan and in Japanese there is a term ‘kizuki’, which can be translated as expanding awareness; a unit of realization or discovery; an “aha” moment; the thing realized or discovered during an “aha” moment.
transforming individual consciousness
If we want to change the world we live in, we need to start with transforming individual consciousness.
‘I love how this game helps expand awareness about ourselves, others, the world we live in, as well as how our actions impact the world. Sometimes I can see the lightbulbs going off in the players head as they make connections and discoveries as a result of the game experience.’
Whilst we know first-hand how thought provoking and powerful this game is, every time we facilitate the workshop, we are struck by just how impactful it is, and how participants feel inspired after experiencing the game.
facilitator training
One of the reasons we know that the game is really impactful is the large number of people who ask how to become a facilitator after experiencing the power of the game themselves.
Alice Richard trained as a certified facilitator of the 2030 SDGs Game, with the Japanese founders of the game, in first facilitator training cohort in Europe in May 2019. Since 2022, she has been a master trainer for the game in Europe, collaborating with Imacocollabo to certify new facilitators and bring the game to new audiences.
Ready to transform the world, one game at a time?
By becoming a certified 2030 SDGs Game facilitator you can offer impactful simulations that invite people to explore the world and themselves. Game facilitators are trained and equipped to lead quality experiences and deep reflections, providing space for powerful ‘aha’ moments to emerge.
